SEMI-STRONG JUMP TAKEOUT RESPONSE
When playing negative doubles, the semi-strong jump takeout is used
for strong hands with a good major suit that are unsuitable for a
negative double, cue bid, or other action. It may not be as strong
as a regular strong jump takeout, but it is definitely forcing to
game.

1H 2C/2D 3S
1D 2C 3H/3S
1C 2D 3H/3S
1C/1D 2H 3S
1S 2C/2D 3H
These are all the sequences in which the semi-strong jump takeout
response applies. In each case a non-jump major suit response would
be non-forcing (see previous chapters), so a game-going hand must
not make a minimum bid in the major. With a game-going hand, the
usual course is to make a negative double and then bid the major.
With hands that are not suitable for this approach, the semi-strong
jump takeout may be used. Non-game jump takeouts in a minor (or in
any suit when negative doubles are not applicable) may be played
as preemptive or strong, according to partnership agreement.
The following conditions apply for a bid to be a semi-strong jump
takeout:
-- Negative double is applicable to the situation.
-- Responder must not be a passed hand. These competitive bids are
weak jump takeouts if responder has previously passed.
-- Responder's suit could not be shown at the one level (a forcing
response, so the semi-strong jump takeout is not needed).
-- The jump must be in a strong major suit. New suit bids in a
minor suit are forcing by an unpassed hand, so minor suit jumps can
be preemptive. Don't jump with a mediocre suit.
-- The jump must be a single jump at the three level. Jumps to game
are not semi-strong takeouts, although they could be made with a
good hand, and jumps to 2H and 2S are preemptive in competition
(since responder could have forced with a one level response).
Typical minimums for semi-strong jump takeouts (there is no
maximum):

1C 2D 3H - S-43 H-AKJ963 D-5 C-KJ74
The heart and club length make a negative double (which might get
passed) unthinkable.

1D 2C 3S - S-AQ1083 H-AK874 D-5 C-93
Strong two-suiters are best shown by bidding both suits as soon as
possible. The jump suit must be strong, however; just make a
negative double with S-Q9732 H-AKJ84 D-K4 C-5.
